Restaurant entrepreneur Bernard “Toots” Shor founded his namesake restaurant in New York City in the early 1940’s. Jackie Gleason always ate there for free and other famous celebrity customers were Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway. The food was known as “nuttin’ fancy” and their specialties were shrimp cocktail, steak and baked potato. Shor was known for his comedic interaction with the celebrity diners. At Shor’s funeral, there was a card written saying “Save a Table for 2”, written by Jackie Gleason.
