The famous Pump Room opened in 1938 and was located in the Ambassador East Hotel in Chicago. The hotel and restaurant were owned by Ernie Byfield, world renowned hotelier and restauranteur. He would personally pick up celebrities at the train station. "This was the place where all of the celebrities were," said famous restauranteur Rich Melman. "If they did not want to be seen, the would go to the Pump Room." Booth One was the most coveted eating spot in the entire country. Booth One would remain empty until a worthy celeb came to claim it. There was even a private phone line that you could call to reach Booth One.
